Athlete Updates and Blog Instructions

Blog Instructions

Athlete Pages are Live. . .

I've already received a few emails reporting early morning workouts. Way to go Dave!

The Athlete pages are live now (a few still need updating). Feel free to click your page and other Iron-April Athletes.

Check out Pauline Falstrom's page, it is very inspiring. She and her daughter, Lorie Laird, are both doing Iron-April solo.

Blog Instructions. . .

1) Go to kevinhaugh.blogspot.com
2) Click on your name

4) If you have a Gmail account, log in. If you don't have a Gmail account and don't want one, click 'Anonymous'.
5) Type your training update (please lead with sport and distance), here is a sample:

"Ran 3 miles on trail in Redwood Park. The first 10 minutes were tough, but the last 20 felt great! -Kev."

6) Click 'Publish Your Comment' and you are done.

At the end of each week, I'll summarize your weekly mileage next to your name on the front page of the blog.

"Ironman is about finishing what you started. Maybe not as fast as the next person, but certainly faster than the one who never started."
- John Collins, Founder of the Ironman Triathlon

Good Luck!

Athlete Update #2
Day 1. . .

April is finally here and its time to get started toward your Iron-Goal!

You'll receive an email tomorrow with instructions for logging your first workout of the month on the website.

I encourage everyone to start training tomorrow and log it on the blog.

Distance. . .

Our goal is based on distance but many folks don't have GPS, access to a track, trip computer or pedometer.

So, I've created these rules for the average Iron-April athlete:

20 minute swim = .5 miles
20 minute run = 2 miles
30 minute walk = 2 miles
30 bike = 5 miles

Of course, if you know your speed/distance please report your actual.

40 Athletes, 40 Coaches, 5,000 miles to go. . .

Assuming everyone makes the goal of 140.6 miles, together we will cover over 5,500 miles.

That is the rough mileage from San Francisco to New York city and back again!

To help every athlete make the Iron-April goal, we need coaches.

You are the Coach!

When you visit the blog and log your training, please also visit the athlete below your name. You are their coach!

Monitor their progress and leave your Athlete comments (praise, push, knowledge).

More on how to leave comments tomorrow.

Congratulations again on joining Iron-April!!!

Kev.

Athlete Update #1

Iron-April starts one week from today!!!

I've been busy working on your Athlete Pages, I expect those will go 'live' later this week. Also, I'll be sending you Athlete Update #2 and #3 before the start of the event.

Athlete Update #2 will provide an overview of the event including: yards/miles conversions, stationary bike time/mileage conversions, etc.

Athlete Update #3 will teach you how to use the blog, how to report your miles and how the rules for "miles sharing" work.

What should you do this week? Planning is the Key.

Monitor your schedule this week and plan your workouts for the 1st week of Iron-April.

Make your plan specific - Where will I train? When? What equipment/nutrition/hydration will I need? Does my plan align with my Week 1 mileage goals (see below)? What are my teammates doing?

Week 1 is absolutely the most important week of the program and planning for it is crucial.

Good luck and congrats on taking on this challenge!

Week 1 mileage goals:

.5 mile in a pool (35 lengths or 18 laps)

28 miles on a bike (2 hours on a stationary bike)

6.5 miles running or walking

Iron-April Week 3 Results

Week 4

It comes down to this – the FINAL full week of Iron-April. Overall, the group is doing fantastic! We now have 7 official finishers with many athletes close behind.

For many athletes this week is the big push to finish. Others are working hard to put miles in the bank for those athletes who might need extra miles on April 30th.

Congrats to all of you for your hard work thus far, let’s make this an EPIC training week! Good luck Iron-April Athletes!!!

Outstanding Team Efforts!

Team Kobold Watch Co. stepped up this week with big mileage despite in climate Pittsburg weather. Nicole, the team captain, swam 2.4 miles to complete the swim portion this week. Ed and Sean have a lot of work to do to bring this team back into contention. Good luck team!

Team Jamie Lin is doing everything right! Jamie and Jeanette logged 2.2 miles swimming, 101 miles biking and 10 miles running this week. The team that rides together, well you know. . . it’s probably just more fun.

Team Hula Girls will likely need some biking miles on April 30th. Mimi Haugh is doing her best at age 62, riding her bike around Kaahele Street. The Hawaii one-mile bike loop may be scenic but 112 loops may make her head spin! Keep it up Mimi! I’m so proud of you! Get your other teammates biking!

“You can quit. . . but no one else will care and you’ll always know.”
- John Collins (Founder of Ironman Triathlon)

What is a "BRICK?"

A "brick" refers to a training session in two sports with minimal rest between sports. For example, a 10 mile bike followed by a 3 mile run is an example of a training "brick". This type of training is essential to success in triathlon. I noticed quite a few bricks this week and the mileage just piled up. Need some miles in a hurry? Try to schedule one brick this week. Don't worry, you are in better shape than 14 days ago and your body will adapt to the different needs of each sport. When you are struggling in the pool, jump on your bike and ride for a while. You might be surprised at how strong you feel.

Four Iron-April Athletes Complete the 140.6 miles in Under Two Weeks!

Amazing work guys, keep it up! Athletes - please leave these folks comments, you may need their miles on April 30th!

Where Do I Stand?

I've re-read and added up the miles from every comment posted (150+) and overall, the group is in a fine position to complete Iron-April. Here are a couple of categories I came up with to guide you in your effort:

Over 50% complete: You are in striking distance, consider this a 3-week event and seize it this week. Other athletes may need your miles at the end of the month. Break out of your normal routine and focus on the sports where you need the miles. You guys should be aiming to get this done by 4/20.

35% - 50% complete: You are right on track to accomplish your Iron-April goal. As compared to 2 weeks ago, you are in better shape and should be able to make up those miles easily in weeks 3 and 4. Also, due to our early end of week 1, there are 3 extra days at the end of the month to help you make your goal. Stay consistent, don't overdue it, you are doing great!

10% - 20% complete: Stay with it! We need everyone to complete this challenge, YOU most of all. The first half of April didn't go as smoothly as planned, but with the help of the other Iron-April athletes you can still do this! Rededicate to yourself to the goal of 70.3 miles (1.2 swim, 56 bike, 13.1 run). We'll get you the rest of the way. If one adjustment can make the difference, it is planning. Take the time right now to pencil out your week. We are all pulling for you!!!
